I was born in Upminster Essex in 1972. My late father was a photographer for 35 Years and also my grandfather had photography as a hobby so it has been around me my whole life. My Father called his photography business ‘Conros Studios‘ due to my brothers name being Conrad and my name being Ross. In the very early days his company was called ‘Home Studios’, he was one of the very first photographers in the UK to go to peoples homes and do photography of children.
I always watched my dad taking photographs and developing them and I have always been fascinated by it all. I couldn’t understand how those people got into the camera and then onto a piece of paper. I can still smell all the chemicals from his printing lab.
When it was time to decide on what I wanted to do, there was no doubt in my mind. I have already been taking photographs in my spare time and I knew from an early age “what I wanted to be when I grow up”. That’s how it all started.
I went to college to study photography and when I left school I worked alongside my dad for a while. After a couple of years I decided to start up my own business and so I went and, with the money I’ve saved up, bought a brand new camera and lights. I was still living with my parents then and when my business was growing I decided to move out and buy my own place where I could set up my own studio.
I couldn’t call my photography business Upminster Studios any more as I have moved from the area so I renamed it to Ross Holding Photography and here I am. I have been a photographer since 1989 and been running my own business for 18 years now.
I haven’t looked back since and I feel so lucky and am very grateful to do the thing I love so much and am so passionate about.
